Team Dubai comes together as Birmingham prepares to welcome students

Key members of the University of Birmingham Dubai’s academic team are now in place and preparing for the arrival of the first students.

Programme directors are now based at the Dubai campus building, as momentum builds towards the University opening its doors in September.

Birmingham is the first global top 100 and UK elite Russell Group university to establish a campus in Dubai. It offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and the following programme directors have now joined the Dubai team:

  • Dr Sachin Dessai – Foundation in Engineering and Physical Sciences
  • Dr Alex Siong Chong – BEng Mechanical Engineering
  • Dr Kashif Rajpoot – BSc and MSc Computer Science
  • Dr UmmeSalma Husein – BSc Business Management
  • Dr Sheikh Selim – BSc Economics
  • Dr Mei-Na Liao – MSc International Business
  • Karen Brodie – PGCE Primary Education

Dr Alex Chong, Programme Director, Mechanical Engineering, commented: “I am truly excited about bringing the University of Birmingham’s BEng Mechanical Engineering degree to our new international flagship Dubai campus.

“My colleagues and I are looking forward to welcoming our very first cohort of students this September on their journey of learning, development and self-discovery with us, a leading global university.”

Dr Kashif Rajpoot, Programme Director for Computer Science, added:We are proud to offer the same high-quality curriculum and teaching of our Computer Science degree programmes in Dubai as at our ‘home’ campus in Birmingham. We look forward to working with students when they arrive in September.”

Students enrolled at the new campus will experience degrees taught and examined to the same recognised high standards as those delivered on the University of Birmingham’s UK campus.

The University of Birmingham Dubai offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including Business, Economics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Primary and Secondary Teacher Education with further programmes to be offered subsequently.

Successful applicants will join a global university which counts 11 Nobel Prize winners among its former staff and students. Students will be taught by outstanding academics; experts in their fields who are shaping policy, influencing society, and changing lives.

Opening its Dubai campus marks the latest phase in the University of Birmingham’s global ambitions and builds on the University’s international teaching activities in Singapore and China, and its extensive international research collaborations.
