Industry and University Partnership (I-UP) Forum 2016

We would like to invite you to the Industry and University Partnership Forums (I-UP Forums), taking place on Wednesday, 23rd November 2016 from 8:30am to 12:00pm at the Address Hotel, Dubai Mall, The Diamond Ballroom. 

The I-UP Forums are a series of initiatives which brings together professionals from universities, industries, and government departments to discuss potential collaborations, partnerships, research, and business development opportunities.

“Supporting the UAE’s Future Skills Needs: Improving Skills Today for Tomorrow”

The global skills and jobs landscape is changing at a rapid pace. Recent studies have outlined key drivers of change that are shaping the global market and that will impact on the future work landscape:

The UAE is an important destination for skilled expatriates, with an 85% expatriate population and an aggressive technical vocational agenda to support employability for it national citizens. How can the UAE adapt its skills infrastructure to meet the challenges of the future? What are the future human capital needs for the country that will affect both skills and jobs and what are the challenges and risks in meeting future skills needs?

Join us at the next I-UP Forum where City & Guilds will be outlining the global trends affecting skills and employment today as well as taking a look at the specific skills needs and challenges of the region.

A panel of educators, political stakeholders and business leaders will then discuss how confident they believe the UAE workforce to be and what needs to be done to ensure skills sustainability in the region.

Speakers and Profiles: 

Professor Barry O Mahony, Dean of the Faculty of Business, University of Wollongong Dubai

Professor Barry O’Mahony is Dean of the Faculty of Business at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. Previously Chair of the Department of Marketing Tourism and Social Impact at Swinburne University of Technology, he has over ten years of academic leadership experience as well as substantial expertise in academic governance, curriculum development, research supervision and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Professor O’Mahony has taught undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in Australia, Ireland, Hong Kong, the United States and the Middle East and works closely with industry and government bodies to ensure the currency of teaching and learning.

Professor O’Mahony’s ongoing research interests include marketing, hospitality and tourism. He has published over 100 scholarly manuscripts as well as editorials and articles in knowledge exchange journals and his research is frequently supported by industry or government funding.

Dr. Naji AlMahdi, Chief – Qualifications and Awards, KHDA

Dr. Almahdi is the Chief, Qualifications and Awards in Dubai (QAD), at the Knowledge and Human Development Authority of the Emirate of Dubai. In this role, he oversees the quality of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Dubai, and ensures that TVET Providers comply with the standards set out by the National Qualifications Authority of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In support of this role, Dr. Almahdi serves on the UAE Vocational Education and Training Awards Commission (VETAC) as well as the advisory committee of the UAE National Qualifications Authority.

As a keen advocate for technical and vocational education and training, Dr. Almahdi has served on numerous national and international committees for the development and implementation of technical and vocational education and training, and is frequently called upon to be a quality verifier for various international awarding and accrediting bodies. He has wide-ranging experience in the management and operational aspects of technical and vocational education and training, including strategic planning, policy development, management of budgets and business plans, assessment of educational institutions, staff performance reviews, staff development, communication and public relations.

Dr. Almahdi has the breadth and depth of experience in education and training, particularly in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and is well informed about technical and vocational education and training systems in developed countries. He has been able to contextualize his international experience to the needs of the people and economies of the UAE and other GCC countries. Dr. Almahdi’s wealth of knowledge about government, business and industry, as well as his ability to develop partnerships, has enabled him to forge vital links between education and the labour market.

Dr. Almahdi’s work in education and management is underpinned by academic credentials in engineering, business, education and the arts. He holds a first degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Numerical Analysis from the United Kingdom. He is also a Fulbright Scholar in Small Business Development in the United States.

Kamal Ben Selama, General Education Expert, National Qualifications Authority (NQA)

Kamal Ben Selama is a General Education Expert serving the National Qualifications Authority (NQA). He works closely with relevant authorities: ADEC, KHDA the UAE Ministry of Education (MoE) to develop and implement policies, systems and guidelines that contribute to the full integration of the Education sector within the QFEmirates, and its articulation with the higher-level outcomes in the general, the Vocational and Higher Education sectors.

Kamal is closely involved in a number of National Committees as  member and /or secretary ; namely the UAE Supreme National Steering Committee and Technical Committee for Teachers Licensing Project, the Pilot Committee for Teachers Licensing Project , the Committee for the Placement of General Education Qualifications on the QFEmirates , the Supreme Committee and Technical Committee for the Placement of Higher Education Qualifications on QFEmirates  and ADEC Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee

Kamal ben Selama has been working in the UAE for over 23 years, during which period he has taken many roles; mainly as Bilingual schools Inspector in both KHDA and ADEC, an advisor for ADEC, and head of Department and teacher development specialist and trainer for both the UAE ministry of Education and the Higher Colleges of Technology.

Kamal is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Education focusing on students’ skills-based learning outcomes.

Kirstie Donnelly, Managing Director, City & Guilds (Moderator/Presenter)

Throughout her career, Kirstie has spearheaded the development of award winning products and services across the adult and consumer learning market place and is a passionate advocate of the role of digital and social media in transforming how people live, learn and work. Her commitment to this area was recognised when she was awarded an MBE in the Queens Honours for her services to e-learning in the FE/Adult sector in 2011.

Her career highlights include nine years with learndirect where she was Director of Products and Marketing and created the first large scale brand and online offer in the provision of adult learning. She also transformed Video Arts, a VHS training business, into an online digital business, produced a range of award winning DVD and e-learning training products and created a first of its kind ‘virtual chamber of commerce’ for Manchester Training & Enterprise Council.

Kirstie has helped to shape policy around e-learning in the UK and was part of the David Blunkett Task Force Group that established the Green paper: ‘Learning Age’, she was an active member of the Race Online 2012 campaign and part of the Government’s ICT review and the European Commission Review Team.  

In 2014 Kirstie was appointed as a commissioner on the future of apprenticeships for a commission chaired by Lord Glasman and Robert Halfon MP. She is also a Fellow of Royal Society of Arts.

Mohammad Shadid, Chief Executive Officer, CONNEC ME Education

Mohammad Shadid is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of CONNEC ME Education, founded in London in 2007, Mohammad worked in an advisory role with selected ministries such as Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar along with the other governmental agencies in the region on managing the educational objectives of specific government sponsored initiatives.

Mohammad’s drive for the last 25 years’ was always based on working with the world leaders in supporting the home grown talents and to provide the right tools for the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow.

With a network of offices branched over 15 countries, Mohammad has successfully proven that you can manage Europe from Abu Dhabi, and working the world leaders in Education, Information Technology, Vocational skills developments.
