Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, the highly reputed technological University in India was established in Dubai in September 2000 in response to the growing demand among the residents of the Gulf region for quality education, in the sphere of Engineering. It was set-up association with ETA – Net, a member of the ETA Star Group.
With an aim of providing high quality technical education to the local and expatriate students of the middle east, the setting up of BITS, Pilani – Dubai in UAE came as a boon not only to the residents of the gulf countries but also for students from other parts of the world.
BITS, Pilani-Dubai offers Engineering Programmes in six different specializations namely; B.E (Hons.) Computer Science, B.E (Hons.) Electrical & Electronics Engineering, B.E (Hons.) Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, B.E (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering, B.E. (Hons.) Chemical Engineering and B.E (Hons.) Biotechnology
Since inception, BPD has grown from strength to strength and is a name to reckon with in the Middle East for Quality Technical Education. BPD’s growth has been substantial over the past few years and there have been major achievements which have contributed to making it what it is today. The major highlights of the Institute’s multidimensional growth combined with its innumerable achievements in a short span of seven years are listed below.
Student Profile
BPD commenced with 60 students in the year 2000 and has about 1500 students on its rolls now, which is about 24 times growth since inception. Out of these, 76% are boys and 24% are girls.
Students have sought admission not only from UAE and other Middle East countries but also from other countries around the world. Currently BPD has about 62% of its students from GCC countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and 38% of its students from other countries like India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia etc. 52.5% of BPD students stay in the hostels provided within the campus.
Faculty Profile
The Institution has recruited well-qualified and highly experienced, full time teaching faculty with Doctorates in respective disciplines who hail from reputed institutions. Some of the faculty are also on deputation from BITS, Pilani – India. The Institution has constantly strengthened its faculty base and the faculty strength has grown sizeably in the last 7 years, not only in number, but also in quality. BPD doesn’t have a single part time faculty.
Growth in Industries offering Internship
The institution has established industrial collaborations with several reputed industries in UAE who are offering internship to BPD students. The growth of these industries has been substantial over the past seven years and currently 212 reputed Industries are offering internship to BPD students which is about 30 times growth recorded since the commencement of internship in 2002.
The Students are offered attractive stipend from these Industries for their work during their internship.
ALUMNI Achievements
Four batches comprising of 400 students have graduated from BITS, Pilani - Dubai till date. Out of these, 278 are boys and 122 are girls.
BPD graduates have got admission for Masters and Ph.d programmes in the best of US universities such as Stanford University, Cornell University, University of Texas, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Southern California etc and best of Universities in other countries such as University of Toronto-Canada, University of Manchester- UK, Nanyang Technological University-Singapore etc. Nearly 48 universities around the world have BITS, Pilani – Dubai students doing their Masters programmes and Ph.d programmes.
BPD Graduates have been recruited by around 238 prestigious companies globally such as Microsoft, Sony Ericsson, Sungard etc in USA, Seimens, MAERSK, J.Ray Mc Dermott, Steinweg Sharaf, Mott McDonald, Standard Chartered Bank, Emirates Airlines etc in UAE and Infosys, Wipro, DELL, Tata Consultancy etc in India.
ACADEMIC COLLABORATION
BPD has signed MOU’s with reputed American Universities for faculty exchange, student exchange, joint research, preferential admission to Masters programmes, twinning programmes etc. The Universities are:

MEMBERSHIP OF Professional Associations
BPD students are active members of distinguished professional associations such as IEEE, SAE and ASHRAE – which are prestigious associations of distinguished Engineers from around the world. BPD has been recognized as the largest student branch of the IEEE in the Gulf. Currently it has 200 student members who actively participate in several international conferences and events.
SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS
BPD students have been organizing the Inter-university sports festival (BITS Sports Festival - BSF) annually and have won the overall championship for 4 consecutive years apart from several other Inter-University Sports Tournaments. From inception, our students have won 90 trophies in 104 Inter-University sports tournaments such as Cricket, Throwball, Badminton, Table-Tennis, Volley-ball etc.
CULTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS
BPD students have won a wide range of competitions in various interuniversity cultural events such as Debates, Elocutions, Dramas, Dances, Quiz contests etc. From inception, our students have won 62 trophies in 78 Inter-University competitions organized by various universities
Visits of distinguished guests
Several VVIP’s have visited BPD since its inception. Some of them are as Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, President of India, Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman, Media Free Zone, H.E. Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Economy and Planning, Govt of UAE, Dr. Ali Bin Abdullah Al Kaa’bi, Minister of Labour, UAE, Dr. Sam Pitroda, an International expert in telecommunications and chief advisor to P.M. of India and Mr. Venu Rajamony, Consul General of India in UAE etc
All the esteemed guests were highly impressed with the indelible growth of BPD in such a short span and appreciated the commendable achievements of BPD students.
